The Sultanate of Oman is an independent, Arab, Islamic, fully sovereign state with Muscat as its capital. The system of government is a hereditary Sultanate in which succession passes to a male descendant of Sayyid Turki bin Said bin Sultan.

In addition to being a sultanate, Oman has a bicameral system, like the US:
    - Majlis a’Shura (Consultative Council) – 82 members are elected by Omani citizens every 3 years and represent the wilayats with populations greater than 30,000
    - Majlis Al Dawla (State Council) – members are appointed by the Sultan and it includes five women.

For a more detailed explanation, including voting and the principles on which the Majlis Al Dawla is based, check out: http://www.omanet.om/english/government/majlis.asp?cat=gov
