It’s a sultanat – resembles quite a lot to a monarchy except there are many different princes holding the power.

The Sultanate of Oman is an independent, Arab, Islamic, fully sovereign state with Muscat as its capital.The system of government is a hereditary Sultanate in which succession passes to a male descendant of Sayyid Turki bin Said bin Sultan.

In addition to being a sultanate, Oman has a bicameral system, like the US:
- Majlis a’Shura (Consultative Council) – 82 members are elected by Omani citizens every 3 years and represent the wilayats with populations greater than 30,000
- Majlis Al Dawla (State Council) – members are appointed by the Sultan and it includes five women.
