This is now known as Telegraph Island. The British cable construction crew built their station on the island rather than the mainland to make it easier to defend the installation against the hostile local inhabitants.http://atlantic-cable.com/CableCos/TelegraphIsland/index.htm
We stopped to swim at Telegraph Island, previously a very remote outpost of the British Army protecting the cable link between Great Britain and the eastern Empire. During our first visits, the Omani military were manning this “rock.” In later visits we found that the Omani troops had also left and dhows were now allowed to visit. http://ondreamon.com/Musandam.htm http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.southtravels.com/middleeast/oman/packages/gifs/musandam-map.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.southtravels.com/middleeast/oman/packages/map.html&h=585&w=614&sz=140&tbnid=9hSOqBnNogfCdM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=136&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmusandam%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=musandam&hl=en&usg=__JV93mj96zQgH5znn20F_mO1SqEo=&sa=X&ei=l2-3Td-nMaXm0QGm7_HhDw&sqi=2&ved=0CDAQ9QEwBA
