The term “middle east” was coined to indicate other geographical locations in relation/reference to Europe (so to say like Europe is the center on the Atlas). It was originally the the Middle Orient. So when it was translated from French to English , the Orient was taken to mean east (as in reference to the location of Europe), instead of the literal meaning of Orient = The Center. ( orientation , balance, beginning )
In other words this whole term is a mistranslation and has no true application as it relates to facts on the ground. Nor is it correct to refer to east Asian countries as the orient because the orient actually means the center not the east.
